Introduction:
In the past 40 years, self-regulating heating cables (heat trace cable) have become very popular all over the world. Self-regulating heating cable can be used for a lot applications like pipe and vessels freeze protection, pipe and tank temperature maintenance, snow melting for roads and walkways, roof and gutter de-icing.
The self-regulating heating cable (self-regulating heating cable and auto temperature control heating cable) is a new generation and the only constant temperature electric band heater. The resistivity of the heating element is of extremely high “PTC” (positive temperature coefficient) and these elements are in parallel connection. The characteristics are as follows: it can automatically restrict the heating temperature, and can automatically adjust the output power with the temperature of the heated body with no need of any other additional equipment; it can be cut or connected in a certain length at free will for use, and allows multiple overlapping with no high temperature hot spots or worry about being burnt up. By right of these characteristics, heating cables are provided with advantages including overheating prevention, convenient usage and maintenance as well as energy saving. They are applicable for temperature control, heat trace, insulation and heating of pipes, equipment and containers, especially there is any material easy to break down, deteriorate, crystallize or condense and freeze. They have been widely used in industries including petroleum, chemical industry, power, metallurgy, light industry, foods, freezing, buildings, coal gas, production and processing of agricultural byproducts as well as other departments. 
The heating cable is composed of nano-meter conductive carbon particles, two parallel buses and the insulation layer. All self-regulating heating cables can be cut into sections in any length or connected via two-way or three-way junction box because of this kind of parallel structure.

FSR Self Regulating Heating Cables provide the most versatility in heat trace designs and applications. Constructed of a semiconductor heater matrix extruded between parallel bus wires, a self-regulating cable adjusts its output to independently respond to ambient temperatures all along its length. As temperatures increase, the heater’s resistance increases which lower the output wattage. Conversely, as the temperature decreases, the resistance decreases and the cable produces more heat. So thermostat is not necessary in some applications. It will never overheat or burnout even when wrapped by itself (overlapped). It can also be cut to any length. The result — an energy efficient heating cable. With optional outer jackets, the heating cable is resistant to watery and inorganic chemicals and protect against abrasion and impacted damage.

1. Definition

Three-layer co-extrusion technology of self-regulating heating cables is characterized in: the cables consist of two conductive wires with a low resistance transition layers, PTC semi-conductive matrix, inner insulating layer and outer insulating layer, metal braid and outer jacket. Among them the three layers — low resistance transition layer, PTC Semi-conductive matrix and inner insulting layer are extruded in one step.

2. Advantages

A. Owing to three-layer co-extrusion technology, the inner insulating layer wrapped the PTC semi-conductive matrix tightly. No gap, no air, no water, no oil and no impurities will contaminate the matrix, which reduces the cable decay rate.

B. Low resistance transition layer contacts the PTC semi-conductive matrix tightly, effectively reducing the current impact to the material of PTC, reducing the start current, prolonging service life.

C. Most of out-sourcing insulation resin will damage the PTC matrix on the performance such as life-span and insulation safety. Huanrui improved it by using self-made special modified insulation resin, the resin matches the PTC well and avoids the damaged to both layers, with longer life-span and higher performance.
